What Are Dental Veneers?

Veneers are thin shells of porcelain that are placed over the front-facing surfaces of the teeth to mask cosmetic imperfections. Porcelain is used because it is naturally durable and looks like tooth enamel – even in the way they reflect light. This way, no one will be able to tell that you have had veneers placed. Veneers can be used to address teeth that are chipped, gapped, misaligned, misshapen, discolored, undersized, and otherwise aesthetically flawed.

The Process of Getting Veneers

It usually takes two appointments for veneers to be placed. During the first visit, your dentist will prepare your teeth by filing down a minimal portion of your enamel. This is done so the veneers lay flat against your teeth and don’t appear bulky.

After your teeth have been prepared, impressions are taken and sent to the dental lab. You will be given temporary veneers to wear until your final ones are ready. In just a couple of weeks, you can return to the practice where your final veneers will be adhered to the teeth. Then, you can leave the office showing off your beautifully enhanced smile.

The Benefits of Veneers

Veneers provide numerous benefits. Here are some of the most prominent ones.

  • Natural-Looking: The porcelain used to make veneers appear just like natural tooth enamel.
  • Quick Process: Veneers can be placed in as few as two appointments.
  • Teeth Whitening: Veneers are more resistant to staining than tooth enamel, so you don’t have to worry about discoloration from dark-pigmented foods or beverages. Veneers can also be shaded to be the exact shade of white that you’d like, so you can show off brighter teeth.
  • Long-Lasting: With proper maintenance, veneers can last upward of 15 years before needing to be replaced.

Veneers FAQs

What Happens to the Teeth Under Veneers?

In order to prepare your teeth for veneers, our Charlotte team may have to remove a very thin portion of their enamel. Do not let that scare you; this does not harm your oral health, and it plays a key role in making sure that your veneers do not look bulky or unnatural.

Your underlying teeth act as the foundation and support for your veneers, so keeping them healthy is essential. Even after you get veneers, you will need to continue caring for them through excellent oral hygiene and routine dental visits.

Do Veneers Give You a Lisp?

Some individuals may notice slight changes in speech after receiving veneers. Your tongue may take a bit of time to adapt to the new shape and thickness of your teeth, which can temporarily affect pronunciation. Most people adjust quickly as they become accustomed to the veneers.

At our dental practice, we focus on precise placement and shaping, which helps minimize any changes to your speech. If you experience persistent difficulty, we will evaluate the fit of your veneers and make any needed adjustments.

Can Veneers Be Used for Bite Corrections?

Veneers can improve the appearance of minor bite issues, such as small gaps or uneven edges. However, they do not correct major bite misalignments because they are incapable of actually moving the teeth. For significant occlusion problems, orthodontic treatments will provide better results than veneers alone.

We will assess your bite during the initial consultation to determine whether veneers fit your goals. If you have significant dental misalignment, you may need to get braces or Invisalign prior to moving forward with this cosmetic treatment.

How Long Do Veneers Last?

Veneers typically last 10 - 15 years, depending on how well you care for them. For many patients, though, they can last even longer; some individuals have had theirs for 20 years or more. Your daily habits, diet, and oral hygiene will all influence the longevity of your veneers.

Our team can coach you on how to maintain the beauty of your new smile for as long as possible. Really, many of the same habits that are good for natural teeth are also highly beneficial for veneers. For example, you need to brush regularly, see your general dentist for checkups, and avoid biting down on hard objects that might break your veneers or your enamel. We also strongly recommend that you avoid the use of tobacco products.

How Many Veneers Will I Need?

The number of veneers you require will depend on your smile goals and specific dental needs. Some individuals choose to enhance only one or a few teeth, while others opt for a comprehensive approach that covers all visible teeth; that might require 6 – 8 veneers or more. We will evaluate your smile and discuss your preferences to recommend the optimal solution.
